I Sing – Peter Gabriel – “The Book of Love”

Its 1:41 am
dark

Going back to the wonderful music that the comedy-drama “Scrubs” gave us.  This song was the in what was thought the series final show. John Dorian or JD was shown leaving the hospital that he had worked at for the past 8 years.
As he left the past and faced what could be his future, this lovely song was playing. When I looked to see who had sung it,it didn’t surprise me to see it was by former Genesis front man Peter Gabriel. He sings the song most beautifully and then I dug a bit deeper and I found I had a Kevin Bacon like degrees of separation to this song.
See,while Peter Gabriel sings “The Book of Love”,he is only covering it. The song was written by Stephin Merritt who led a band called The Magnetic Fields. The Magnetic Fields was created by Merritt as a way to get his songs,he is one of the most prolific songwriters that most of you may not know about.

Merritt has several side projects as well and one of those is The 6ths. The 6ths was born when Merritt, tongue firmly planted in cheek, noticed that no one had created a tribute album in his honor,so he created one and called it The 6ths. Here he wrote and played his songs which were in turn sung by other artists.
In 1995,The 6ths released their first album which was called “Wasp’s Nest”. The first single was a song called “San Diego Zoo” and was sung by my favorite vocalist that I ever booked,Barbara Manning. I was invited to the record listening party that Barbara hosted and where she sang her song.
But “The Book of Love” is also a lovely song full of hope and possibilties of what love is and could be. JD stands there and ponders his what his life COULD be and when I watched the scene and heard this song,I couldn’t help but realize I knew what love really was and should be and it was priceless and beautiful and heartbreaking.
And it saddens me knowing I’ll only have those memories and never the future again.

The Book of Love

Peter Gabriel

The book of love is long and boring
No one can lift the damn thing
It’s full of charts and facts and figures
And instructions for dancing

But I
I love it when you read to me
And you
You can read me anything

The book of love has music in it
In fact that’s where music comes from
Some of it is just transcendental
Some of it is just really dumb

But I
I love it when you sing to me
And you
You can sing me anything

The book of love is long and boring
And written very long ago
It’s full of flowers and heart-shaped boxes
And things we’re all too young to know

But I
I love it when you give me things
And you
You ought to give me wedding rings

And I
I love it when you give me things
And you
You ought to give me wedding rings
You ought to give me wedding rings

  1. Yeah, Peter Gabriel is so distinctive. I miss him.
I don’t remember this episode, though. We used to watch Scrubs pretty religiously. Possibly we stopped by this point.
I can see how this episode would bring up very raw feelings for you……
